Moisés Escamilla May, a notorious Mexican gang leader, has died in prison after contracting coronavirus.
Escamilla, 45, was the leader of a group within the feared criminal cartel Los Zetas.
He was serving a 37-year sentence for organised crime, including his role in the decapitation of 12 people in Yucatán.
More than 3,450 have died with Covid-19 in Mexico, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Through her own Twitter account, the actress, real name Sharifah Amani Syed Zainal Rashid Al-Yahya, joined the #AskKajol Q&A session where she asked about the favourite character Kajol has portrayed throughout her acting career.
"My most fav. character is Anjali. She's the most like me," Kajol replied.

Good on all of us. That it takes a pandemic for us to shift our focus on appreciating our rich and varied heritage of food is unfortunate. But I choose to see the silver lining of this very gray cloud and understand that this current situation we’re in, is opportune for us to lend support to the hardworking folks in the hawker centers who are hardest hit by COVID-19.
Are there more than the ones listed here that deserves mention? Without a doubt. And you can definitely find those lists of hawker delivery floating about the internet that have been created by other local food publications. However, due to limitations of space, I can but only pick 10 that I feel deserve a special mention due to the uniqueness of their offerings and for going out of their way to make sure that us Singaporeans, are not left feeling starved and craving for the comforts of the outside.  Read more n...    less

WARSAW (Reuters) - It has become difficult for Poland to hold its presidential election on May 10 as planned, Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin said on Monday, blaming the opposition for delaying works on legislation that would allow for a postal ballot during the coronavirus epidemic.
In April the lower house of parliament, where the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has a majority, backed a plan to conduct the presidential election on May 10 by postal ballot. But the legislation has still to be approved by the Senate, which is controlled by the opposition.
"May 10 is difficult," Sasin, who is also State Assets Minister, told private radio Zet, adding that PiS is now considering holding the vote on May 17 or May 23, both allowed by the constitution.
"A week ahead of the election Poles do not know when the election is held. It is the opposition and the Senate who are responsible for this".

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top U.S. health official Anthony Fauci will not testify next week to a congressional committee examining the Trump administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic, the White House said on Friday, calling it "counterproductive" to have individuals involved in the response testify.
The White House issued an emailed statement after a spokesman for the House of Representatives committee holding the hearing said the panel had been informed by Trump administration officials that Fauci had been blocked from testifying.
"While the Trump administration continues its whole-of-government response to COVID-19, including safely opening up America again and expediting vaccine development, it is counter-productive to have the very individuals involved in those efforts appearing at congressional hearings," White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement. US crude prices bounced Tuesday but were unable to keep in positive territory, a day after crashing below $0 for the first time owing to crippled demand and a storage glut, while the commodity rout sent equities sharply lower.
Investors have also been spooked by US reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had undergone cardiovascular surgery earlier this month and was in "grave danger".
West Texas Intermediate for May delivery rose to $1.10 a barrel in early trade after diving to an unprecedented low of -$37.63 in New York as the pandemic brings the global economy, transport and factory activity to a halt. However, it later eased back -$4.52.
The sell-off in May futures came because the contract expires later Tuesday, meaning traders needed to find buyers to take physical possession of the oil -- a job made near-impossible as storage becomes scarce.

Disney (DIS) will this week stop paying 100,000 employees, almost half of its global workforce, as it seeks to weather the economic storm created by the coronavirus pandemic.
The move by the world’s largest entertainment company will save as much as $500m (£400m) in salary costs, according to the Financial Times.
While staff placed on unpaid leave will receive full healthcare benefits, those based in the US have been encouraged to apply for government benefits.
The move comes as more than 20 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits since the coronavirus crisis began.
Staff based in Paris will be placed on France's “partial activity scheme,” which allows companies to furlough workers and covers up to 84% of salary costs.

Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, is one of only a handful of world leaders who have played down Covid-19’s threat, for instance by sabotaging quarantine measures imposed by nearly all of the country’s state governors.
“It’s raining. We’re going to get wet. And some are going to drown in the rain,” the far-right populist shrugged last week, after dismissing the pandemic as a fantasy. That cavalier attitude has sparked nightly pot-banging protests and daily media condemnations. They accuse Bolsonaro – who apparently thinks shutting down the economy will wreck his chances of re-election – of putting his own political future before Brazilian lives.

A bill that would add $250 billion to the emergency loan program for small businesses hurt by the coronavirus pandemic fell short in the Senate Thursday.
In a nearly deserted Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) tried to approve the legislation by voice vote, but Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) objected to the request, calling it a “political stunt” while noting that the program hasn’t yet run through its initial $350 billion funding. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) offered an amendment to the bill with provisions Democrats have been seeking, which McConnell promptly blocked. The Senate then adjourned until next week.
Even if it had passed the Senate, the bill was not expected to pass the House, given Democrats’ interest in new requirements for the small business program, as well as a broader aid package. “The bill that they put forth will not get unanimous support in the House,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday. “It just won’t.”

GAZA/WEST BANK (Reuters) - Political and physical divisions between Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza have induced two very different responses to the coronavirus pandemic, with a strict lockdown in the first and crowds milling about freely in the second.
In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which has 250 recorded cases of the COVID-19 lung disease, a lockdown on public life was swiftly imposed - Bethlehem was sealed off after the first outbreak in March and a state of emergency declared.
But in the Gaza Strip, a densely populated coastal enclave, there have been few restrictions on movement and people packed into public markets and beaches, with few wearing masks against the risk of coronavirus contagion.
Forty km (25 miles) apart and separated by Israel, the West Bank and Gaza have no direct link between them.
Gaza, measuring 375 sq km (145 square miles), is home to around two million Palestinians. Since 2007 it has been under the control of the Islamist militant group Hamas, bitter rivals of Preside...    less

Brazil is bracing for a surge in coronavirus cases as doctors and researchers warn that underreporting and a lack of testing mean nobody knows the real scale of Covid-19’s spread.
“What’s happening is enormous underreporting,” said Isabella Rêllo, a doctor working in emergency and intensive care in Rio de Janeiro hospitals, in a widely shared Facebook post challenging official numbers. “There are MANY more,” she wrote.
As Latin America’s worst hit country, Brazil officially has 9,056 coronavirus cases – including actors, singers, government ministers and Fabio Wajngarten, press secretary of the president, Jair Bolsonaro.
With 14 million Brazilians living in densely populated favelas where basic sanitation is frequently lacking, informal workers are struggling from lost income during lockdown, and social isolation is challenging or impossible. The first case has already been reported in an Amazon indigenous community.

As many as 85 million children in school feeding programs across Latin America are at risk after many countries in the region shut schools over the coronavirus pandemic, the UN Food Agency warned Tuesday.
Suspension of food programs "will pose a challenge to guarantee food security and nutritional status for many children, especially the most vulnerable groups of the population," the Food and Agriculture Organization said.
FAO urged governments to implement emergency measures including distributing food to the most vulnerable families, increasing social protection programs and emergency food rations, as well as exempting school children's food from taxes.
"Social protection systems, for example, can play a key role in guaranteeing the food of the most vulnerable population in the coming weeks," FAO regional representative Julio Berdeque said.

China reported on Tuesday just one new domestic coronavirus infection but found 20 more cases imported from abroad, threatening to spoil its progress against the disease.
The single case in Wuhan will boost China's view that it has "basically curbed" the spread of a disease that is believed to have emerged in a live animal market in the central city in December.
Wuhan and its 11 million people were placed under strict quarantine on January 23, with the rest of Hubei province going under lockdown in the following days.
Authorities tightened restrictions in the city even further on February 11, confining people to their homes as health workers faced a daily deluge of well over 1,000 cases -- a move officials say was critical in containing the virus.
Other cities across the country enacted further measures to compel most people to stay indoors, and no new domestic infections have been detected outside Hubei for many days in a row.
But the country is now concerned about an influx of cases from a...    less

WASHINGTON (AP) — The first participant in a clinical trial for a vaccine to protect against the new coronavirus will receive an experimental dose on Monday, according to a government official.
The National Institutes of Health is funding the trial, which is taking place at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. The official who disclosed plans for the first participant spoke on condition of anonymity because the move has not been publicly announced.
Public health officials say it will take a year to 18 months to fully validate any potential vaccine.
Testing will begin with 45 young, healthy volunteers with different doses of shots co-developed by NIH and Moderna Inc. There’s no chance participants could get infected from the shots, because they don’t contain the virus itself. The goal is purely to check that the vaccines show no worrisome side effects, setting the stage for larger tests

"We are committed to working with Congress to offer testimony at the appropriate time." Fauci's testimony was being sought for a May 6 hearing by a House Appropriations subcommittee that oversees health programs, said spokesman Evan Hollander. The Washington Post first reported that Fauci would not testify. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been one of the leading medical experts helping to guide the U.S. response to the highly contagious virus that has swept across the United States. Continue reading this news at pgslot
