Yes, heating plastics can and does release toxic chemicals. If you could, you would be much better off. I believe (but am not a plastic chemist) that dangerous chemicals can be washed off the surface with cold water and detergent, and plastic is just as" safe " as it was before it was heated. I don't know how safe this plastic is to start with, though.
Tea bags are another example of plastic that releases chemicals. This is well below the melting point of plastic, but above the critical temperature at which chemicals undergo some changes. Boiling water is higher than this temperature.
