The Breath You've Been Forgetting to Take

    I discovered I was holding my breath during a completely ordinary moment last Tuesday. I was sitting in traffic, mentally running through my to-do list, and my shoulders were practically touching my ears. My chest felt tight. My jaw was clenched. And I realized I hadn't taken a full, intentional breath in probably three hours.

    This might sound dramatic, but it changed how I think about breathwork entirely. We talk about breathing like it's something automatic, something we don't need to think about. But somewhere between deadlines and scrolling and trying to keep it all together, so many of us forgot that our breath is actually the most powerful tool we have access to in any given moment.

    When I started paying attention to how I was breathing, I realized my nervous system had been running on fumes. Short, shallow breaths. The kind of breathing that keeps you in survival mode instead of actually living. So I started experimenting with really simple practices. Not fancy pranayama techniques or anything complicated. Just pausing, maybe three times a day, and actually feeling my lungs fill completely. Exhaling longer than I inhale. Noticing how my body responded.

    The first week was honestly humbling. I couldn't even take five deep breaths without my mind wandering or my chest feeling resistant. But by week three, something shifted. I noticed I was less reactive to frustrations. I could sit with difficult emotions without immediately spiraling. My shoulders dropped about two inches permanently.

    What amazed me most was realizing that breathwork isn't something separate from my life. It's not another thing I need to "do" to be well. It's the foundation that everything else builds on. When I'm breathing consciously, I'm present. When I'm present, I make better choices about how I spend my time and energy.

    I think so many of us are walking around in a mild state of panic without even realizing it. And the antidote is literally inside us, available in any moment we remember to access it.
