The Saudi Pro League's "remarkable" spending spree on players is set to continue, according to one of its leading executives.

"I think the budgets are in place for a number of years - you know, I don't see this slowing down," said British director Peter Hutton, who sits on the league's board.

The SPL has lured some of football's biggest names since five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo joined in January from Manchester United.

They include former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, Liverpool's former captain Jordan Henderson and established players from Chelsea, Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

In addition, last month Al-Hilal made a world-record £259m bid for Paris St-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

Hutton, who has been a senior executive at Eurosport, ESPN, IMG & Facebook, said: "I've worked in sport for 40 years and I've never seen a project as big, as ambitious and as determined to be a success."

Speaking to BBC sports editor Dan Roan in a wide-ranging interview for BBC Radio 5 Live's special 'The Saudi Story', he said it was "not necessarily a bad thing" if European football was not as strong as it has been.

Hutton also put the Saudi spending into context, saying "it has got the world of sport talking but it's a quarter or a fifth of what Premier League clubs have spent this summer".

PSG have allowed PIF-funded Saudi Arabia outfit Al-Hilal to entertain transfer talks with Kylian Mbappé (24) after accepting their world-record €300m bid, according to reports from AFP and Goal. As reported earlier this Monday by Fabrizio Romano, the Riyadh-based outfit have submitted a €300m bid for the out-of-favour Mbappé. The 24-year-old all-time record goalscorer at PSG was left out of the Luis Enrique-led squad that flew to Japan on Saturday for their pre-season summer tour in Asia.

The France skipper is entering the final year of his contract with PSG. The Ligue 1 champions want Mbappé to extend his stay at the club or leave now rather than for nothing next summer. However, Mbappe is adamant he will play for PSG next season whilst refusing to sign a new contract with the French champions. The latter believe their key striker has already struck a deal to move to Real Madrid next year as a free agent.

Al-Hilal has reportedly made a formal €300m offer by letter, but such a record-shattering deal could only happen with the agreement of Mbappé. So far, the 24-year-old has never expressed an interest in moving to the fast-growing and spendthrift Saudi league for a lucrative bid.

Ahead of the Asian leg of the 2022 MotoGP™ World Championship season, the grid were making their penultimate European appearance at the Aragon GP for Round 15. It certainly proved an entertaining affair, and one that had huge title implications from the very first lap.

Before lights out, Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) made his return to the track for the first time since the Italian GP, and Championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP&tradewelcomed the return of the eight-time World Champion as he hoped he could help him disrupt Ducati’s dominance. Unfortunately for the Frenchman, the opposite happened.

DRAMA ON LAP 1 AS MARQUEZ AND QUARTARARO COLLIDE
MARQUEZ AND NAKAGAMI OUT FOLLOWING CONTACT ON LAP 1

In the most dramatic opening lap of the season, Quartararo smashed into the rear of Marquez’ RC213V to crash out before the Spaniard then went on to collide with LCR Honda counterpart Takaaki Nakagami with none of the three making it around for Lap 2. It was a sensational start and got pulses racing immediately, and the drama was far from over.

Out front, and just like in Misano, Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) led Gresini’s Enea Bastianini, while Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) were duking it out for third. A brilliant start from South African Binder pushed him into the podium battle, but he couldn’t hang on for a surprise result as with two laps to go, Espargaro made his move. Onto the last lap and Bagnaia was still the race leader, but coming under intense pressure from ‘The Beast’.

UNSEEN: "YOU'LL HAVE YOUR KNUCKLES RAPPED LATER!"
ARE TEAM ORDERS NOW ON THE CARDS AT DUCATI?
