The prosecution must prove the following elements beyond a reasonable doubt in order to convict someone of strangulation in Virginia:
- The defendant knowingly, intentionally, and unlawfully applied pressure to the victim's neck,
- This pressure restricted the victim's breathing or blood flow, and
- This caused the victim wounding or bodily injury.
