Since the early 1970s, Forest have enjoyed an illustrious and successful career. Under Brian Clough, they won a series of major trophies including a League Championship, three FA Cups and the 1990 League Cup.
With a manager such as Clough at the helm, it is no wonder that Nottingham Forest became known as one of the most famous and exciting sides in English football. Their style of play was a mixture of elegant passing and attacking football.
During the late 1970s, Clough brought a new flair to Forest and they began to compete for major honours with teams such as Liverpool. They were the first team to win a domestic league title in the new Premier League, and beat them in the first ever live game shown on TV.
In addition, they have achieved a number of other notable achievements in the years that followed. They won the 1978 League Cup and finished runner-up in 1979, the same year that they were one of only two English teams to reach the final of the European Cup.
After a long period of relegation, the club were finally promoted in 1976-77 to the second tier of English football. Their record points tally from that season was the fifth-lowest in history, 52 (two points for a win until 1981).
The following year, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United after extra time and then lost the replay. The following season they slipped down the table and were relegated from the first tier of English football for the first time in their history.
They did however make an impressive return to the top flight in 1996-97 after finishing in 20th place in 1998-1999, and reclaimed the Premier League title the following season after finishing runners-up in 1999-2000.
