There are many different mahjong variants across the world, but there are also basic rules and strategies that most variations share. The Setup

Each player starts with 13 mahjong tiles, and a rack is used to hold the tiles. The rack has a pusher that sits against the back and will curtsy as soon as the player has picked up a tile and placed it on the rack.

The Deal

After the dealer has shuffled the mahjong tiles, they are dealt to the players in a clockwise fashion. The dealer gives the first and third tiles from the top row to the players, and then takes two more tiles and places them in front of them, giving each player 14 mahjong tiles.
