Monkeypox dinyatakan darurat kesehatan global oleh WHO setelah lonjakan kasus
Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia telah menyatakan cacar monyet sebagai darurat kesehatan global.Dalam sebuah pernyataan sore ini WHO mengatakan wabah di lebih dari 70 negara adalah situasi "luar biasa" yang sekarang memenuhi syarat sebagai darurat global.
Deklarasi badan kesehatan PBB itu dapat memacu investasi lebih lanjut dalam mengobati penyakit yang dulu jarang terjadi - dan juga memperburuk perebutan vaksin yang langka.
Meskipun cacar monyet telah ditemukan di beberapa bagian Afrika tengah dan barat selama beberapa dekade, cacar monyet tidak diketahui memicu wabah besar di luar benua atau menyebar luas di antara orang-orang hingga Mei, ketika pihak berwenang mendeteksi lusinan epidemi di Eropa, Amerika Utara, dan tempat lain.
Inggris telah mendeteksi hanya tujuh kasus sebelum 2022, tetapi awal pekan ini ada 2.137 kasus yang dikonfirmasi di Inggris, dengan 2.050 di Inggris dan mayoritas di London.
Mendeklarasikan keadaan darurat global berarti wabah cacar monyet adalah "peristiwa luar biasa" yang dapat meluas ke lebih banyak negara dan memerlukan respons global yang terkoordinasi.
WHO sebelumnya menyatakan keadaan darurat untuk krisis kesehatan masyarakat seperti pandemi Covid-19 , wabah Ebola Afrika Barat 2014, virus Zika di Amerika Latin pada 2016 dan upaya berkelanjutan untuk memberantas polio.
Deklarasi darurat sebagian besar berfungsi sebagai permohonan untuk menarik lebih banyak sumber daya global dan perhatian terhadap wabah.
Kemarin The New England Journal of Medicine menerbitkan temuannya setelah tinjauan terbesar sejauh ini terhadap virus yang mencakup 16 negara.
Hal ini diketahui menyebabkan gejala seperti flu dan ruam dengan bintik-bintik kecil yang melepuh sebelum berkeropeng.
Namun kini gejala baru lainnya juga telah ditemukan.
