Epic teases Fortnite materials Season 5, confirms release date
Epic Games has launched its first official breakout of Fortnite Season 5 and verified a few things we already knew. In a tweet on Monday morning, the business stated that the brand new Fortnite season was just 3 days away. While the July 12 release date was previously declared, it's nice to have it supported since Epic can sometimes be a bit late on their release -- looking at you Playground Mode.
Though the official launch date is fine, it's not the only tease in the Cheap fortnite items tweet, which seems to feature a mask emerging from one of the rifts that keep popping up in-game. While enthusiast speculation around the mask is currently heating up online, it seems probably that this can be a reference to the Japanese kitsune, or fox. In accordance with Western yokai folklore, the kitsune may shapeshift -- mostly into human kind -- also possesses various supernatural characteristics.
As soon as it's difficult to say what this could mean for Fortnite Season 5, it does seem to be the very first reference to Japan we've seen so far. While other eras of history have emerged -- such as wooden carriages, pirate references or anchors to early Egypt -- this is the first time we've seen something which points to Ancient Japan as a potential influence to this season's heavily theorized, but still unconfirmed, time-travel motif.
More importantly, at least for most gamers, is the Fortnite carnival possibility that this may tease a kitsune skin unlocked throughout the Season 5 Fight Pass. The very first teases for Season 4 showed skins which were available through its Battle Pass therefore it doesn't seem like much of a stretch.
