There was a lot of speculation concerning what the OSRS gold bug was, and what was causing it. So in the interest of transparency we'd like to have a while to explain the issue.
One of the group was implementing the code to the pickpocketing update. This involved producing stackable pouches that are treated as being coins. On departure, the aim was to convert them into actual coins, partially to ensure a PKer could find the value if appropriate.
After converting a pile of items to a stack of coins, it is appropriate to check that the calculation does not overflow the maximum integer limit of the game's language (2.1 billion).
Regrettably, even though the components were found to be Buy Runescape gold acting correctly during testing, the flaw affecting different items was not spotted since it wasn't expected to have shifted.
Old School RuneScape hasn't undergone a rollback of some sorts before, and also to set about restoring the game to an earlier state (prior to this bug) was a massive undertaking. The damaging effects of the bug resulted in a consensus fast being reached, with the group resolved to take on a rollback, if anything were possible. Following investigation found that it might be possible, though not easily done.
