A World of Warcraft player who hit Blizzard using a DDoS attack has become sentenced to a single year in prison in the US.
38-year-old Romanian Calin Mateias flooded Blizzard's European servers with traffic between February and September 2010 within a bid to avoid his in-game rivals from signing in, the Department of Justice said.
Mateias, who had previously been known online as Dr Mengele (following your Nazi doctor who conducted deadly experiments on prisoners) has also been ordered to pay for $29,987 (£22k) to Blizzard to pay the cost of combating the DDoS attack.
The Department of Justice said Mateias was motivated after becoming embroiled in disputes to World of Warcraft players.
"Mateias, using his in-game avatar, often taken part in collaborative events, like 'raids' where players joined forces in order to meet game objectives and were rewarded with virtual proceeds or in-game advantages," the DoJ said.
"[He] became included in disputes with players for any variety of reasons, like the division of loot and membership in raid teams."
Mateias continues to be in custody since 20th November after being extradited from Romania following an investigation through the FBI. He pleaded guilty in February to just one count of intentional harm to
