Cowboys' Dak Prescott needs surgery after suffering hand injury, Jerry Jones says
Dak Prescott will miss multiple weeks after suffering a hand injury that will require surgery, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday night after his team suffered a 19-3 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jones told reporters postgame that Prescott needs surgery on a joint above the thumb on his throwing hand.
"Dak will be out for awhile," Jones said.
The Cowboys' medical staff told Prescott that he suffered a clean break, the quarterback said in a postgame news conference. A timeframe for his return is unclear as of Sunday night. He said he expects to have that surgery Monday.
"Just another bump in the road," said Prescott, who missed 11 games in 2020 after suffering a compound fracture and dislocation to his right ankle, and one game last season due to a calf strain.
When a quarterback follows through on a throw, he's in danger of hitting a helmet or a defensive lineman's hand. It's a hazard of the job. It's unlucky to do it two straight times, and painful. Prescott had to leave Sunday night's game after hitting his right throwing hand on defensive linemen twice in the same fourth-quarter drive.
In the middle of the drive, Cooper Rush came on the field while Prescott went to the sideline. Prescott was looked at by athletic trainers and then jogged to the locker room.
It was an ugly night for the Cowboys' offense. Prescott couldn't get much going against Tampa. But losing a game lingers for just a week. A hand injury to Prescott was a much harsher blow.

A dreary start to the season Sunday night for the Dallas Cowboys became far more costly when quarterback Dak Prescott suffered an injury to his right hand that will require surgery and keep him out of the lineup for an unspecified period.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters following the 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Arlington, Tex., that Prescott suffered “an injury above his joint in his thumb.” Prescott’s injury will require surgery and he’ll be sidelined “for several weeks,” Jones said.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will require surgery on his throwing hand after suffering an injury in Sunday night's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced.
The procedure is expected to keep him out six-to-eight weeks, sources told ESPN's Todd Archer.
Prescott sustained a fracture near his thumb. He told reporters postgame that he'll undergo surgery Monday, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.
"I was told it was much cleaner than it could have been," Prescott said.
The signal-caller collided hands with a Buccaneers defender while attempting a pass late in the fourth quarter. He jogged to the locker room to get X-rays after having his hand looked at on the sideline.
Backup quarterback Cooper Rush will presumably start for Dallas until Prescott is ready to return. The 28-year-old's only career start came last season when he threw for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a win over the Minnesota Vikings.
Prescott and the Cowboys' offense sputtered in prime time, scoring just three points. The quarterback threw for just 134 yards and zero touchdowns against one interception.
Prescott didn't miss a game in the first four seasons of his NFL career. But he missed 11 games in 2020 with an ankle injury and one game last season with a calf strain.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is out indefinitely after suffering an injury to his throwing hand in the team's Sunday night loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Prescott left the game with a little more than six minutes remaining after hitting his hand against the hand of Bucs linebacker Shaq Barrett. He was examined on the sideline before heading to the locker room to receive further evaluation. After the game, Cowboys' manager Jerry Jones said that Prescott suffered a fracture near his right thumb. This injury will require surgery and means that the franchise's leading signal-caller will miss several weeks.
The former Mississippi State standout struggled in the season opener, going 14-of-29 for 134 yards with one interception. Prescott also totaled 11 yards on two rushing attempts. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush was brought in to finish the game, which ended in a 19-3 loss for Dallas.
This is the third time in as many seasons that Prescott will miss time due to injury. A horrific ankle injury ended his 2020 campaign just a few games into the season, and he missed one game last year with a calf strain. The quarterback also reported some ankle soreness in practice last week, but he blamed it on his new cleats and was not expected to miss any time. There is no timeline for Prescott's return from his latest injury.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: QB Dak Prescott needs surgery on throwing hand, will miss 'several weeks'
As if the Dallas Cowboys' nightmarish 19-3 loss to Tom Brady and Tampa Buccaneers wasn't enough, "America's Team" was dealt another significant blow after the game.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott left Sunday night's contest early with a reported thumb injury. Speaking with reporters following the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced that Prescott suffered a fractured joint in his throwing hand, adding Prescott would undergo surgery and miss "several weeks."
Prescott left the game with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter. While it's unclear when Prescott suffered the injury, many have pointed to a play where Buccaneers' Shaq Barrett appears to grab the quarterback's thumb after attempting to knock down a pass.
Like much of his team, Prescott struggled in Sunday night's opener, even before the injury. Prescott finished 14-of-29 for 134 yards and an interception.
For now, the Cowboys will have to move forward without Prescott as they turn to backup Cooper Rush. Rush finished 7-of-13 for 64 yards in relief of Prescott.
Rush made the only start of his five-year NFL career last season, going 30-of-47 for 422 yards and three touchdowns in a 20-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
Rush and Cowboys will look to avoid falling to 0-2 next week when they host the defending AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals.
