The act of living in a van, RV, motorhome or campervan aka ‘van life’ or ‘#vanlife’ has been growing in popularity over recent years and moreso since the onset of Covid and many people not being able to travel abroad for vacation or trips. For those living in expensive cities or locations, living in a van can also bring with it great savings and a means to pay of debt or work their way to a state of financial freedom.

    But how so?

Firstly, campervans come in many different shapes, sizes and price ranges. From million dollar motorhomes or RVs that rival the side of a stadium band sleeper tour bus and cost more than most of us earn in a life time, to tiny homes on wheels that have been lovingly build ‘DIY’ style and everything in between. Today, we’ll be looking at the more affordable options and self-build campervans.

Save money with a campervan conversion

A DIY campervan conversion or ‘self-build’ is just that; a vehicle that started life as something else and someone decided to convert to a traveling home for vanlife. Popular options include panel vans, mini-bus, ambulances, horse boxes and even prison vans. Very often it is the most economical way to go as these vehicles can be picked up cheaply at an auction, however the conversion cost can often equal or be greater than the cost of the van.

    Living ‘vanlife’

Once your van is setup and ready to go, the cost of living ‘vanlife’ can be very low. Especially if you are comparing it to some of the more expensive locations in the world and so great savings can be made. If you work an job that supports remote working, you could save yourself thousands of dollars per month living in a van. Not only that, but you tend to reduce consumer products and spending when you live in a tiny space. You are also much more aware of waste and are careful with spend.

The cost of travelling in a camper van

Travelling or living as a digital nomad is slightly different as you’ll be wanting to move around more, experience things and thus spend money. You’ll also probably want to work less so you can do all these things. But how can you earn an income whilst travelling? And you can you do it whilst living in a van (or out of a backpack!) and working less hours?

Van life income streams and planning

Planning your van, travels and preparing income streams, especially passive income can have a massive impact on the success of your van life trips. Taking some time out may mean you could travel for many years rather than just a few weeks or months.

It’s much easier to plan at home and develop income streams than when you are travelling — then simply maintain them when on the road. If you have a good job, then invest some money in projects that can earn a passive income. If you have lots of time but no money, then consider developing a passive income or even some freelance work that you can take on the road with you and only requires a few hours or days per week.

By thinking about things and preparing, you can not only earn on the road, but the savings you make mean you will be living well within your means. Which means you have more to invest in revenue-generating projects. This is how the rich get rich. And by living within your means, earning a little bit extra and investing the rest wisely, you can too! A campervan or ‘van life’ way of living enables you to do just this.
