With the improvement of devices and gadgets like Bluetooth earphones or Air Pods which are easier and less hassling to carry around, listening to music while exercising has become popular. Listening to the right genre of music while running can pump up the mood even exhausted from the exercise. The right music indeed inspires you to finish your exercise, but there are also disadvantages to this, just like any other thing.
PROS
Lesser Exertion
Because music motivates, the exertion rate is reduced. In other words, because your mood is set by the music, you enjoy the workout more than you find it a laborious feat.
Increases Speed
By listening to upbeat, positive, motivating music, you run faster than you normally do.
Passing the Time
Running outdoors while listening to music makes running less dull. With music, time passes fast, and you do not know you have been running for a long time already. When you also have time for a break, it helps to listen to music while relaxing and recharging yourself for the next lap or heading home.

Enhanced Performance
Music, according to studies, has a pain-blocking effect on the receptors of the brain hence decreasing the feelings of exhaustion and discomfort. Since the runner is no longer distracted by the uncomfortable or displeasing feeling, he or she can continue to run.
CONS
Just like any other thing in the world, there will always be downsides. Even listening to music while running has its disadvantages, and here are some of them.
Distracts the Runner from Focusing on the Body
While running, runners need to be extra attentive to the condition of their bodies or the signals emitted by the body. When listening to music, the runner focuses on the music instead of the body signals. You will not be able to hear the changes in your breath sounds or the thumping of your heart.
Does More Harm than Safety
When tuning in to music especially when amplified to a very high volume, you will not be able to hear safety cues and avoid dangerous situations, like wildlife encounters or the sound of vehicles approaching.
Blocks the Therapeutic Effects of the Natural Environment
When you plug in the earphones, you will not be able to hear the therapeutic sounds of nature and enjoy the visual stimulation of the surroundings.
Now, I am not saying that you should stop listening to music because of these cons. There are ways where you can still listen to music while running outdoors, more safely and practically.
First, use headphones that produce ambient music. This way, you can listen to music and can hear safety cues in the surroundings too. Do not opt for noise-canceling ones.
Second, know when to put them on and remove them. When approaching an area swarming with people and vehicles, it is best to remove them for a consciousness of what’s happening.
Third, when running at dawn or late at night, better not use headphones especially for ladies, so that you will be aware of your surroundings or if there is someone following you.
Lastly, wear wireless earphones for convenience. Wires get tangled and you might be stopping from time to time if the cord detaches from your device.
