How to Change a Circular Saw Blade

A circular saw is one of the most widely used power tools in the industry. With the ability to cut almost any material and cut it the way you need it, circular saws are some of the most universally useful and used power tools on the planet. Consequently, in the interest of different projects or applications, or simply because a certain blade has seen better days, the occasional change of circular saw blade is unavoidable.

Fortunately, changing the blade on your circular saw is a bit easier than you might think. In fact, with just a few simple steps and an adjustable wrench, you can change that blade in no time. Learn more information here.

As with all other power tool repairs and procedures, the first thing you need to do to begin replacing your circular saw blade is unplugged the tool. Turn the tool off and remove the battery or unplug the tool and make sure the entire cord remains in view during the repair.

Place the saw on a sturdy surface that allows the blade to hang slightly over the edge of the table. If you have access to clamps, securely attach the saw to the bench. If not, simply use your weight to secure the saw by holding it firmly with the saw's operating handle.

Slide the blade guard up and hold it in place, if necessary, by supporting it with the thumb of the hand holding the saw to the table. Slowly rotate the saw blade by hand to locate the blade offset hole (a smaller hole drilled through the blade at a point generally not far behind the saw teeth). Insert a standard 3/8 "bit (or similarly shaped object) halfway down the off-center hole and continue to turn the blade clockwise until the bit hits the saw. Although many more circular saw models Newer ones have a blade locking mechanism that would make this step unnecessary, however, the bit will prevent the blade from moving as you continue the procedure.

Place an adjustable wrench on the blade bolt in the center of the saw blade. This bolt holds the blade to the saw and, to ensure that the blade remains secured to the saw while the tool is attached, it has a left-hand thread or the opposite thread one is used to. Consequently, the bolt must be turned clockwise to remove it. Remove the bolt, remove the bit, and remove the old blade.

Slide the new blade onto the saw blade hub and by hand replace and slightly turn the blade bolt on the hub. Reinsert the bit into the offset hole and turn the blade counterclockwise until the bit engages the saw body.

Tighten the bolt firmly by hand before fully securing it with your adjustable wrench and finally plug the saw back in or replace the battery and turn the saw around (carefully) to make sure everything is assembled correctly.
