As independent college admissions consultants, we read hundreds of question essays every year and see many common mistakes in application essays. Below are some tips on what to avoid in a college application essay:
1. Submit a generic essay. Use the essay to convince a college that they want you more than someone else. One college won't choose you over another if they're not memorable and if they sound like everyone else. Make sure your essay reflects your special abilities, unique traits, thoughts, and/or personality. Admissions people look for a story that shows your character and reasoning.
2. Don't follow directions. First, you need to answer the question. Read the message carefully. If there are multiple parts to a question, you need to address each of them. For example, if you choose to "Report an incident when an error occurred. How did it affect you and what did you learn from the experience?", Be sure to carefully and critically analyze both the event and its impact on you.
