Urban affairs involve various economic and social activities in the city such as business or construction projects, cultural or environmental issues etc. In the local government city council meeting, we discussed the financial affairs of the New York City. It is a city founded in the north-western part of the United States with the population of 8.175 million people and is the most ethnically varied in the U.S.. New York is an attractive city because of its commercially driven character with the headquarters of such business giants as IBM and Infosys Limited. It has also been engaged in several big developmental projects such as the World Trade Center site and Penn Station project, expected to end at 2020, set up to promote the economy of the state. The latter involves a redevelopment project of the subway station to improve the railway transportation of the city.

In the meeting, we discussed the business ethical issues pertaining to the industries found in the City. We chose this subject of discussion because it plays a significant role in shaping the economy of the city. Moreover, it is no surprise that ethics is especially liable to violation in the business environment. It was not even necessary to find any specific cases, discourteous behavior happens every day in any megapolis, thus more or less regular discussions on this issue are inevitable.

Business ethics are the set principles that influence the operations in the business environment. The key players of business ethics are managers, employees and customers. It is important to ensure that the companies follow the required rules and regulations hence provide quality production. It is the duty of the local government to establish the ethics to provide direction to the investors venturing into different industries (Palmer, 2015).

The ethical issues in business include matters such as legal compliance, which means that the company is required to comply with the rules and the regulations set by the federal and environmental laws. There is also a fundamental ethical notion that the enterprises should operate under integrity and trust whereby the customers should be treated with utmost honesty. Moreover, it states that the firms should be committed to satisfying the needs of the customers. It helps the companies gain trust from the buyers hence results in business success.

We also discussed diversity issue, which demands that the people from a different culture are treated with respect, both employees and customers. Such approach motivates the workers to remain in the company hence be committed to maximizing their efforts to ensure the business success. It also attracts new employees hence results in the firm reducing the recruitment costs and helps it acquire appropriate workers.

Decision making is also an ethical issue in business, which must protect the beliefs of the employees at the workplace and discourage the discrimination of the workers, thus allowing the environment conducive to working . Decisions made by management must not only pursue economic goals but support healthy moral atmosphere in the company.

Business ethics is an urban affairs issue because it is an aspect that influences the life of the city very strongly. The population present in the area are either employees or the customers of the businesses running in the city hence there is a need for the local government to give this issue a priority. In the end, the council discussed and decided to set a policy that ensures that any individual or business that fails to adhere to it faces punishment. The board felt this decision will benefit the citizens of the state as it provides fair treatment when conducting business transactions. All the pertaining legal questions and the procedure of implementation of the policy were agreed to be discussed in the future.
