“I thought that this year would be the last, and I prepared hard from spring camp to the middle of the season, but my physical condition and condition did not keep up, so I decided to retire.”
Cha Woo-chan, who graduated from Gunsan Namjung-Gunsan Commercial High School, was selected by the Samsung Lions in the 2006 rookie draft with the 7th overall pick in the 2nd round.
When he was a rookie, he showed weakness in control even though he threw a powerful ball, and went back and forth between the starter and bullpen.
Since then, Cha Woo-chan, who has been playing an active role as a member of the 'Samsung Dynasty' by steadily guarding the team's mound, acquired a free agent (FA) qualification after the 2016 season and made a new home with the LG Twins.
After winning a total of 40 wins during the 4-year contract period with LG, he succeeded in extending the contract for 2 years ahead of the 2021 season.
He was unable to play for a while due to a shoulder injury, but returned to the mound in June 2021 and showed a not bad pitch, and immediately competed in the Tokyo Olympics.
After participating in the Olympics, he underwent shoulder surgery right away, and eventually left LG after completing rehabilitation last year.
Ahead of this season, he showed a strong will to burn the last flame by signing a contract with Lotte for an annual salary of 50 million won.
He went through a considerable amount of training from spring camp, and on June 10, he pitched in the Futures (second team) league game and finished one inning safely.
However, perhaps due to the aftermath of his injury, his restraint did not rise to the end, and he eventually decided to end his long career as an active player.
Cha Woo-chan's first-team career record is 112 wins, 79 losses, 1 save, 32 holds, 1,668⅔ innings, 1,413 strikeouts, and an average ERA of 4.51.
As a national representative, starting with the 2013 World Baseball Classic (WBC), he kept the mound at the Incheon Asian Games in 2014, Premier 12 in 2015, WBC in 2017, Premier 12 in 2019, and Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
