How does a cannabis clubs work?

  • Over the past five years, a multitude of cannabis dispensaries and even cannabis associations have opened in the United States and Canada ; a cannabis association is an establishment where marijuana is distributed and consumed recreationally. In these places you can buy a lot of varieties of marijuana, tinctures and creams and even Space Cakes and assorted food made with marijuana. Bearing in mind that American associations are completely legal and more accepted, the ones we have in Spain are quite different.

They are places and establishments where members can acquire marijuana and consume it in a private setting , as long as they are of legal age or, in many cases, over 21. These associations work non-profit, which means that all the money collected is used in improving and maintaining the association.

How do I become a member of a cannabis association?

Generally, many cannabis associations require that you be over 21 years of age, that you are a habitual consumer of marijuana recreationally or medicinally, and that you be introduced by someone who is already a member of the association so that they can guarantee that you do not intend to resell what that they supply you; the person who brings you to the association must be responsible for following the rules of the cannabis club. Most likely, they will interview you, and they also require an annual subscription, which will vary from association to association, and it goes without saying that you will have to present an identification document such as DNI, NIE or passport.

Depending on the association and the region, they may require you to be a resident of the city or community, to avoid cannabis tourism; Many cannabis associations prohibit the entry of tourists, although in Barcelona there are quite a few that accept cannabis tourism. Some associations also require, for therapeutic users, that you present a medical certificate indicating an illness suitable for treatment with cannabis.

    Is it legit?

The issue of the legality of cannabis associations in Spain is one that has been debated for years, with Catalonia and the Basque Country being the two communities that have fought the most to maintain them. Over the years there have been many cases of associations that have been closed by the police due to non-compliance with various imposed regulations ; Cannabis can only be consumed inside the premises of the association, it cannot be taken outside as it would imply possible drug trafficking, and also if you do not have a membership card, consumption will not be “legal” either.

The more members an association has, the more interest it usually generates for the police; The moment the association is considered a drug trafficking situation, that is, there is a profit motive for one of the parties involved, the police can proceed to close the association.

All the money that the association earns must be invested in the association itself . Some associations sell self-grown weed, and other associations require their members to be home growers, with the association simply being where they go to consume it.

There is a legal vacuum here, where it is not very clear whether marijuana can be grown or not. According to the most recent laws, you cannot consume or grow marijuana in public view. In theory, this would imply that it is legal as long as the consumption or cultivation of marijuana is private and solely for self-consumption and, in addition, the plants are not visible and the smells cannot bother anyone.

It is worth saying that despite such a soft attitude towards cannabis, Spanish law allows the use of marijuana only in a closed area, which is what a cannabis clubs are. But it can also be an apartment, your private house, and so on.

It is worth distinguishing a cannabis club from a coffeeshop, as in the example in Amtserdam. If in the Netherlands you can safely go off the street and smoke marijuana without an invitation, then in Spain you need a special invitation from a member of the club, otherwise you will be refused. You can also get an invitation from the club itself.

According to Spanish law, cannabis clubs and their premises must be closed to the public, signs and advertising are prohibited.

How many cannabis associations are there in Spain?

According to the National Drug Plan, there are more than 1,400 cannabis associations clubs throughout Spain. Many of them are concentrated in the north, and especially in Catalonia, where it is said that there are more than 500 associations throughout the community. There is also a large concentration of cannabis clubs in the Basque Country.

During the last years, the police have condemned several associations throughout Spain, being during the years 2010 to 2016 when more associations and federations were closed; In the Basque Country, in 2015, a club that had more than 290 members was condemned on suspicion that marijuana was being trafficked so that it did not remain only among the members.

Seeing the current situation, there is still a long way to go for an official and decent regularization of this type of association. We are still a long way from having the famous Amsterdam coffee shops.

Find out in your city with a quick internet search, and get an interview with your nearest association. I 'm sure they'll accept you as a member !
